NOM Recommends - December 2006
When you say the words 'Manchester' and 'band' in the same sentence, to many, they automatically imagine swaggering guitars and 'proper Manc' vocals, alongside cheeky lyrics aimed at the lads. With the single, 'Cease To Exist', Manchester's The Nightjars twist that stereotype. With its fluid guitars and almost monotone vocals, 'Cease To Exist' is a brilliant example of the direction guitar music should be heading. The band confess to being influenced by american indie rockers Pavement and this is apparent throughout their music. Also close connections to the likes of The Longcut and Polytechnic are evident and have definitely not done the bands sound any harm- particularly on second track 'Disabuse'; which focuses more on the wall of sound than the lyrics which are kept to a minimum. The Nightjars make a welcome change to a lot of the predictable indie sounds making it commercially right now. If you appreciate music with swelling rhythms and harmony this is definitely a single worth buying. |
