Don't Worry About The Government - May 2006

Relatively unknown band The Nightjars, who hail from the place where all things are great, are set to support fellow Mancunians, The Longcut on the last night of their tour (25th May, Manchester academy 3). In light of some time away from playing live sets, the band have recorded some new songs for their  second EP and will be sure to be showcasing them at up and coming dates around the town.

Kicking things off, The Nightjars start opening demo track 'Bass Drum' with just that. A succession of drum beats leads us willingly into some soft,  melodic guitars followed by singer Ollie's distinctive voice. The  sound is perfect for lounging in your back garden in the sun, a real credit to all things summery. If the light  tones of the guitar do not please, the next  track, 'Disabuse' is sure to be more than fulfilling.

Another perfect song for the summer, 'Disabuse' combines delicate touches and has clearly been worked on to almost perfection. This song sums up the sound of The Nightjars in three and a half minutes. That  sounds goes something like: music you can just as easily dance to as you can play in your car with the rooftop back. Soft vocals cushioned by melodic guitars and smashing cymbals is definitely not a bad  combination for the band.

Final track of the EP, 'Cease To Exist' is a sure fire one for the live performances. Although it might sound  like it has the best intentions, with lyrics like "I've got no reason to stay" and "I just had to get myself away" there is definitely a sneaking hint of something darker in the band. It's also very clear where The Nightjars get some of their influences from on this track. Think Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and The Longcut divided by REM. The band have managed to create a satisfying blend of things a group needs. A definitive sound, songs you can dance to and live charisma. Claim them as yours before they become  another of Manchester's greatest.
